Gallery Wall Spacing: A Simple Guide

A gallery wall can feel relaxed and collected while still being carefully planned. The key is not perfect symmetry—it is consistent spacing, a clear overall shape, and a relationship to the furniture below.

Choose the boundary

Imagine a single rectangle around the entire arrangement. This invisible boundary helps a mix of frame sizes read as one feature. Keep the outer edge balanced and avoid allowing one small frame to drift far beyond the rest of the group.

Keep spacing consistent

For most home gallery walls, a gap of roughly two to four inches between frames creates separation without breaking the composition apart. Smaller art can sit slightly closer together, while larger pieces may need more room. Whatever spacing you choose, repeat it throughout the arrangement.

Find the visual center

Anchor the arrangement near eye level and relate it to the furniture beneath it. The center does not need to be a single frame. It can be the point where several pieces collectively carry the most visual weight.

Plan on the floor first

Lay the pieces on the floor and move them until the balance feels right. Start with the largest work, then place smaller pieces around it. Photograph the arrangement before transferring it to the wall so you have a reference while hanging.

Test with paper templates

Cut paper to the dimensions of each frame and tape the templates to the wall. This makes it easier to check height, spacing, and the relationship to nearby furniture without making unnecessary holes.

Mix with purpose

Different frame finishes and sizes can work together when the artwork shares a palette, subject, or overall mood. If the art is varied, repeat one frame color. If the frames are varied, use artwork with a consistent tonal direction.
